William G (gb) wrote: this whole movie which regrettingly watched was the worst movie i had ever see i know it was propaganda from someone who had no idea what he was talking about and tried to act as if he did and edited in the right spots while showing what he wanted and not giving a full interview with the other side to be shown

Jacob E (us) wrote: [FONT=Arial] I think a hunter would be proud of this movie. Why? It is the ultimate trap of a movie. It lures you in with an excellent narrative beginning, a great setting, good acting and some hilarious jokes presented in a comical way. But once you get past about 30 minutes, suddenly the movie takes a Michigan left from Good Ole Memory Lane to Crap Street. Everything has a strong showing in the beginning but eventually degrades as the movie goes on. The plot is about Reuben Soady, a Michigan native hunter. The Soady family has certain traditions and one of them is to go up to the Soady Deer Camp in Escanaba, Michigan 1 day before hunting season starts. Activities include telling stories, drinking whiskey, euchre playing, beer drinking, shooting deer, more beer drinking, and beer drinking. By the way did I mention beer drinking? 4 guys meet at Deer Camp, Reuben, Jimmer Negamanee (an insane man who believes he was abducted by aliens with a unbelievable capacity for all forms of alcohol), Remnar Soady (Reuben's brother), and Albert Soady (Reuben and Remnar's father). Reuben's problem is that he is in danger of being the oldest Soady family member to not have bagged a buck. In order to avoid being the oldest, Reuben decides to change up the family tradition to change his luck. Suddenly strange events begin to occur like all the whiskey becomes sour, their euchre cards change in the middle of the game, they find an insane DNR officer who believes he saw God on the ridge near the Soady deer camp, and... Well, do I have to list more? Can't you see where this movie went wrong? Suddenly, what could have been a great hunting comedy turns into a bad Twin Peaks episode. People fall into trances, they have strange nightmares, and the DNR officer becomes possessed by a Native American spirit (almost like Bob from Twin Peaks?). The acting is great though. Jeff Daniels does a great job with being a hunter who is reluctant to push the trigger. None of the other actors are famous, but they all do a great job in a movie as bad as 2001: A Space Odyssey (okay, Escanaba in Da Moonlight isn't that bad because nothing is worse than 2001). Their are some very funny lines to remember and some hilarious scenes to recall but nothing else. Overall, Escanaba in Da Moonlight begins strong but just flops and dies like a deer hit by a truck. Final Rating: 4 out of 10

Remi L (kr) wrote: Its amazing that such a groundbreaking time in American history has been virtually ignored by the public and media. Then again, it involves the history of gay civil rights, so I shouldn't be surprised. The only reason I had ever even heard of Harvey Milk was because of the Sean Penn biopic that came out recently. This documentary chronicles the life and career of Harvey Milk, San Francisco's openly gay city supervisor who was, of course, assassinated because his very existence rattled the status quo in the 70s. Watching this doc made me feel like a window had been opened into this man's life through the people he befriended during his political career. I was also fascinated by San Francisco and California before my own existence. While I enjoyed the Sean Penn film, I feel like it should be accompanied by this film. I definitely recommend if you're a fan of civil rights documentaries or are just interested in learning about a little piece of California history.

Russell G (kr) wrote: This movie has a solid concept, and most of the movie works well, but once the movie reaches the final chapter it turns into an utter disaster. The main character is reasonable but underdeveloped. It seems like he has a decent back-story that was worth going into, in order to make the audience care more about the character and his dad. Pinker, the villain, is even less developed, he works as a dumb slasher, but more elaboration on him and his motives would have been a good move. The movie takes its time and lays good groundwork with a race to identify and catch a serial killer. Once caught, he is sentenced to death, but then gains the ability to posses anyone he comes into contact with. How this happens in highly unexplained. There is also an unexplained guardian ghost figure that makes no sense either. Lack of logic, structure or rules for the supernatural aspects is just poor writing. Things take a bad turn when a chair sprouts eyeballs and grabs the hero. It only gets worse in the resolution, as Pinker chases the hero through different TV shows. All of a sudden it feels more like a bad early 90s music video on MTV. There was a lot that could have worked here but it is all flushed down the toilet by bad writing and poor execution. This just reaffirms Wes Craven is not a master of anything.
Stanley C (us) wrote: I used to give this movie a 1-star because I felt the storyline seemed too predictable, but I decided I was being too hard afterwards and I've come to enjoy this for the family element and creepy, scary Christmas fun because this movie inspired me not to be so pessimistic, or negative even in such dire situations. I also believe it seemed convenient for Michael Doughterty to extend his artistic talents into Krampus just like with his drawings, I found it funny and appropriate how the family gets attacked by a very diverse army of Christmas toys: a naughty bear, baby-voiced and baby-headed Christmas cookies, a doll with angel wings, a Jack-in-the-box and a killer robot.
