Justin B (kr) wrote: A caveat for the very beginning: If you want, in a movie, what passes for typical comedy these days, this movie is not for you. However, if you, like me, want a comedy movie that, much like the president Bush analog prominently featured in it, actually tries to think about what it's doing, this is a must watch. It satirically confronts more issues of the Bush administration era than I had previously thought it possible for a movie to do and still be legitimately funny. I've professed before (not to you people, this is my first ever review) that when I seek entertainment, it is because I want to escape my thoughts on the reality of life. This movie does not accomplish that, but it fills another, exceptionally important niche: It presents that reality in a fashion that makes it bearable, much more so than any grim action movie or drama of the era of 2014 could. Sometimes, we NEED a reminder that it is all right to laugh even as something makes us cry. We NEED more movies like American Dreamz.

Corey B (ca) wrote: As a kid I always disliked this one because Mahoney wasn't in it. But in rewatching the series, and realizing just how useless a character Mahoney really was, it's actually the best in the series since the first. The biggest plus is that there are only two new characters, Lassard's "Guttenberg-lite" nephew and Janet Jones. This means that everyone actually gets a moment to shine and nobody feels like they've been forgotten. It only took five movies, but Hooks actually gets to take down a villain. It's not particularly funny since every joke is recycled from previous movies, but unlike the other movies in the series, the plot doesn't feel like an afterthought. In most Police Academy movies (two being the exception) the first hour involves training scenes, and the last half hour involves an entirely unexpected crime of some sort that just pops out of nowhere. Here, the villains aren't an afterthought, and that actually helps keep the story moving. The final half hour is pretty exciting in a bland, made for television action scene kind of way.So, yeah, getting rid of the Gutt, and changing the setting is actually a plus. Maybe I'm just delirious after watching four movies in rapid succession, but this felt like an uptick in quality.
Stefan G (us) wrote: This is one those films that could have been really funny, but it simply fails in a lot of areas. To be completely fair, the story is sensibly written, even though the film's ending somehow makes very little sense. However, a big problem I have with the story is that too much of the film is spent on building up to the main plot, and this is a film with not enough time to spend on back-story. In fact, I contend that some scenes, including the unnecessarily drawn-out prison rodeo, felt like they shouldn't even be in the film at all. The characters don't really react to their situation in a comic way, although their performances, I must say, are quite decent. Really, I find that this film feels like a formulaic comedy film that spends too much time developing its central premise, and not enough effort on what could have been a great script. It does have some genuinely funny moments, but those don't make up for a botched effort. This could have been a really good movie, but something went wrong, and the strange thing about it is that I can't really figure out what mistake the producers ultimately made.

Brian S (nl) wrote: The 80's really brought us some great movies, wether they are horror, science-fiction, action or slasher. And this is defenitly one of them!! Introducing the famous bad ass Rambo to the screen, with Sylvester Stallone, this movie is well acted, well executed and very entertaining, full of action and blood and explosions. It's a classic action flick to see. Recommended !!
